Donation Collection for local Homeless Shelter
We were able to collect many items during our homeroom collection. The students of Luther Burbank Middle School donated socks, gloves, toothpaste, shampoo, and soap for a local homeless shelter in Highland Park. This was a successful event due to the numerous donations we collected. We were able to fill several boxes to donate.
Animal Awareness Week
The week was very successful, fun, and educational for the students who have or want a pet. Students learned to provide their pets with toys and treats at a low cost because we made a toy out of an old shirt and a cat toy out of a cork. These activities were successful because we were able to help all the students make the treat and the toys. The students were able to get information on Friday because the pamphlets had lots of valuable information. We had 12-15 students attend each event. We researched online using chromebooks to gather information to inform students on how to best care for their pets. We reached out to local veterinarians in Highland Park and invited them to speak or share advice with the students. Unfortunately, not one confirmed to participate. Maybe in the future we should reach out multiple times in different ways.
Animal Supplies Giveaway
We did a good job. We gave away all the animal supplies! We were able to help animals in our school by giving away supplies. We created a survey that 357 students responded to. We collected the data and it helped us think about what to buy and about how many to get. We tried to balance out between getting toys, food, and leashes/collars. When we started to giveaway we figured out that most people have pet dogs. We started setting up around 3 and while we were setting up people started to form a line. People were excited and happy to get supplies for their animals. This was a good thing because pet food is expensive. Overall, the giveaway was successful and a good idea to help animals in our Luther Burbank Middle School community.
Final Reflection
Our original idea was to help homeless animals and homeless people, but since we were not allowed to bring homeless animals onto our school campus, We decided to help homeless people and animals in our community. If we were to do our project again we would like to do more to help homeless people. We have noticed that homeless animals are treated better than homeless people. We would like to inform people about easy ways to help the homeless such as teaching them how to make kits to give out to someone in need. We were going to just have two events over the year. We were excited by the amount of donations brought in by the students of our middle school. As the first semester came to an end, we lost some of our GBLA members due to change in the area they were living, ill family members, and tutoring to improve academic grades. Second semester began and we began to recruit more members. We created announcements, flyers, and a survey question. Many students responded showing an interest in the club, but only a couple new members were able to stay dedicated. We decided to change our spring animal fair event into two separate events. This would be easier to manage with our small group. We also felt our school community might benefit and we could impact more students by breaking the one event into multiple days. We feel that these two events were successful. We provided needed supplies and information to students to help support them to care for their pets.
